🪔 About

Mattannoor Sreekanth is a distinguished Indian percussionist, renowned for his mastery of the chenda, a traditional Kerala drum, and his expertise in classical percussion forms such as Thayambaka, Panchari melam, and Panchavadyam. Born into a family of hereditary temple percussionists in Mattannoor, Kannur district, Kerala, he is the son of the legendary chenda maestro Mattannoor Sankarankutty Marar. Sreekanth received rigorous training in Kathakali chenda and Thayambaka, following in his father's footsteps. He is a prominent performer, frequently collaborating with his father and brother, Mattannoor Sreeraj, in highly acclaimed "triple thayambaka" performances that are popular across Kerala and beyond. These family ensembles are known for their synchronized rhythms and their role in perpetuating Kerala's rich percussion traditions. Sreekanth's performances are integral to various traditional art forms of Kerala, including Kathakali, where the chenda serves as an essential accompanying instrument. Beyond performing, Mattannoor Sreekanth is also dedicated to teaching. He provides training in Panchari Melam to students, including those at the Different Art Centre in Trivandrum, contributing to the preservation and promotion of these intricate percussion styles.
