Meenakshi Chitharanjan, an eminent Indian classical dancer, teacher, and choreographer, is a leading exponent of the Pandanallur style of Bharatanatyam. Born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, in 1955, she began her artistic journey at the tender age of four under the tutelage of the renowned father-son duo, Pandanallur Chockalingam Pillai and his son Subbaraya Pillai. She performed her arangetram (debut) in 1966 when she was nine years old. Her rigorous and disciplined training under these gurus laid the foundation for her distinguished career. After a temporary hiatus following her marriage to Arun Chitharanjan, she returned to dance, further refining her art. She received specialized training in abhinaya (expressive dance) from the esteemed Kalanidhi Narayanan, and also trained under Srinivasa Pillai, S. Pandian, and Padma Subrahmanyam at various points. In 1991, Meenakshi Chitharanjan founded Kaladiksha, a dance institution in Mylapore, Chennai, dedicated to promoting Bharatanatyam and preserving the purity of the Pandanallur tradition. The academy has grown to accommodate around 100 students at a time, reflecting her commitment to passing on this rich heritage. She has performed extensively both in India and internationally, conducting lecture-demonstrations and workshops at prestigious forums. Her style is characterized by its purity of line and form, precision, and subtle expression, while also bringing a novel freshness to traditional content.
