Meera Krishnanand Kanageswaran is a Bharathanatyam dancer, teacher, choreographer, and researcher, born in Jaffna, Sri Lanka. She began her formal Bharathanatyam training at the age of five under Smt. Kirupa Ratneswaran in Sri Lanka, and later continued her training in India with Shri. Madurai R. Muralidharan and Smt. Chithra Muralidharan. Kanageswaran holds an MFA in Dance from York University, completed in April 2021, and is currently a PhD candidate at the Centre for Drama, Theatre & Performance Studies at the University of Toronto. In 2006, Meera Kanageswaran established her dance school, Confidance Bharatham, based in Mississauga, where she serves as the principal teacher. Her unique artistic vision involves using Bharathanatyam to narrate contemporary and secular stories. Her performance career has taken her to Germany, Switzerland, India, South Africa, the US, and Canada. Kanageswaran's recent choreographic works include "Destructive Desires," "Balancing on the Hyphen," and "Let's talk about it." As part of her MFA thesis, she also created two dance films, "Iḻappu" and "Isolation." Her academic research focuses on exploring Bharathanatyam within the Sri Lankan Tamil context, particularly in the Tamil diaspora, and critically examining contemporary Bharathanatyam pedagogy. From 2000 to 2002, she was actively involved in introducing Bharathanatyam to the Christian community, choreographing dances for contemporary Christian music, performing at church conventions, and conducting workshops in Switzerland on choreographing Christian dances.
