Madras Kadiravelu Saroja (April 7, 1931 – June 13, 2022), professionally known as M. K. Saroja, was an acclaimed Indian classical dancer renowned for her profound mastery of Bharatanatyam, where she excelled in both technical precision and expressive abhinaya. Born in Madras (now Chennai), she commenced her rigorous training at the tender age of five under the tutelage of the esteemed Guru Kattumannarkoil Muthukumara Pillai, and later received invaluable mentorship from the legendary dancer Ram Gopal. Her illustrious career spanned over seven decades, during which she made pioneering efforts to globalize Bharatanatyam, becoming one of the first post-independence exponents to teach the form abroad in cities such as London, Geneva, and Paris, beginning in the 1950s. She performed extensively across Europe, the UK, Germany, Italy, Nepal, and throughout India, captivating audiences with her adherence to traditional technique and intense devotional fervor. Saroja also ventured into Tamil cinema as a child artist in the 1940s, appearing in films like Nalla Thambi, Paithiakaran, and Krishna Bhakt, though she later declined further roles to prioritize her dedication to dance. She collaborated with luminaries such as Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, Pandit Birju Maharaj, and Vempati Chinna Satyam, and toured extensively with Ram Gopal's troupe. As a dedicated guru, Saroja trained over 200 students in Chennai from 1985 to 2015 and taught annually in Paris from 1970 to 2000 at the Centre Mandapa, an institution established by her student Milena Salvini. She also served as the first professional Bharatanatyam instructor at M.S. University in Vadodara during the 1950s and later at Rabindra Bharati University in Kolkata, shaping the next generation of dancers. Saroja composed more than 80 choreographic items, enriching the Bharatanatyam repertoire. She retired from professional dancing around 1998-2000, leaving behind a profound legacy as a true bhakta of Bharatanatyam. M. K. Saroja passed away in Bengaluru on June 13, 2022, at the age of 91.
