Kumari Selvamani is a historically significant figure in Indian classical dance, particularly Bharatanatyam, recognized as India's first woman nattuvunar. Born in Madras (now Chennai), India, she was the elder sister of the renowned Bharatanatyam guru M.K. Saroja. Selvamani received her dance training from Vidwan Kattumannarkoil Muthukumaran Pillai of Chidambaram, who taught both her and her sister at their Georgetown residence in Madras. Her pioneering role as a woman nattuvunar marked a significant shift in the traditionally male-dominated role of conducting Bharatanatyam performances, which involves singing, playing cymbals, and choreographing. Her influence extended to the next generation of dancers, as she taught the basics of Bharatanatyam to the celebrated dancer Kamala Lakshman.
