Mona Mitra is a classically trained Indian dancer specializing in Kathak, holding a "Visharad" certification in the art form. Her extensive training includes tutelage under renowned gurus Pandit Chunilal Goswami and Dr. Amita Dutt, who is a senior disciple of the legendary Pandit Birju Maharaj and the Dean of Fine Arts at Rabindra Bharati University in Kolkata. Mitra's Kathak training encompasses both the Jaipur and Lucknow Gharanas, which she began at the age of four. With a teaching career spanning over 15 years, Mona Mitra has dedicated herself to preserving and promoting Indian classical dance. She commenced her teaching journey in India, followed by periods in Los Angeles and Portland, Oregon. Since 2010, she has been a prominent Kathak instructor in the Boston area, where she founded Mona's Dance Academy in Reading, Massachusetts. The academy offers structured training in Kathak, Bollywood, Semi-Classical, and other Classical Indian dance styles to both children and adults. As a performer, Mona Mitra has graced stages in various cities across India, as well as in Los Angeles, Portland, and Boston. Her performances and those of her students from Mona's Dance Academy have been featured by numerous cultural and non-profit organizations, and on local television channels in both India and the United States. She is known for her patient and supportive teaching style, encouraging students to develop graceful movements, intricate expressions, and a deep understanding of Kathak's theoretical background. Mona's Dance Academy also provides opportunities for students to perform on various platforms, offering both in-person and virtual classes.
