Munna Lal Shukla (born December 7, 1943, died January 11, 2022) was a highly acclaimed Kathak guru, choreographer, and performer of the Lucknow Gharana. He hailed from a distinguished family of Kathak dancers, being the grandson of the legendary Kathak Maestro Achhan Maharaj and the nephew of the illustrious Birju Maharaj. His initial training in Kathak was under his father, Sunder Lal Shukla, who was a disciple of Achhan Maharaj. He further honed his skills under Birju Maharaj in New Delhi from 1961, supported by the National Scholarship Scheme of the Ministry of Culture. During this period, he participated in numerous productions and delivered solo performances across India. Shukla's teaching career began in 1968 at Kala Chhaya in Pune, where he trained advanced Indian and foreign students until 1975. He also imparted classical dance education to students at the Film and Television Institute of India. From 1976 until his retirement in the early 2000s, he was associated with the Kathak Kendra (National Institute of Kathak Dance) in New Delhi. Post-retirement, he continued to teach in East Delhi and at the Bharatiya Kala Kendra. He was also a visiting professor at Nalanda Vishva Vidyalaya and contributed to course design for North Indian Taal and Aesthetics of Kathak. As a prolific choreographer, Munna Lal Shukla created many duet and group compositions, including "Himraja," "Talmala," and "Kathak ki Kahani." His full-length dance dramas include "Kaliyadaman," "Makhanleela," "Shan-e-Mughal," and "Anvesha." His artistry was characterized by storytelling through dance, emphasizing subtlety and lyrical grace. Awards & Honours: Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (2006), U.P.
