Pandit Ningthoukhongjam Khelchandra Singh (1920-2011) was a highly esteemed Indian scholar, lexicographer, historian, and a significant figure in the promotion of Manipuri culture, including its classical dance form. Born on September 1, 1920, in Uripok Ningthoukhongjam Leikai, Imphal, Manipur, he received his early education in the traditional manner under various gurus and pandits of Manipuri literature and culture, such as Dinachandra Singh, Pandit Parasuram, Pandit Madhop, Pandit Chandra, and Pandit Deva Singh. He was deeply initiated into the study of the ancient Manipuri language and its rich literary heritage. Singh began his professional career with the Manipur Secretariat Service, eventually retiring as an Under Secretary to the Government of Manipur. Following his retirement, he dedicated himself to scholarly pursuits, guiding numerous research scholars and serving as a Visiting Fellow of Manipuri Language and Literature at the Jawaharlal Nehru University Centre for postgraduate studies in Imphal. He also taught Manipuri language and literature extensively. His profound contributions to Manipuri literature include authoring over 30 books in Meitei and English. Notably, he published "Manipuri to Manipuri and English" in 1964, recognized as the first modern general dictionary in the Meitei language. As a historian, he edited eight significant works, including "Genealogy of Manipuri Kings" and the royal chronicles of Manipur, "Cheitharol Kumbaba." His "History of Old Manipuri Literature (Ariba Maṇipurī Sahityagī Itihasa)" is a prescribed textbook for postgraduate and research studies. Pandit N. Khelchandra Singh's influence extended to Indian classical dance through his role as Vice Chairman of the Jawaharlal Nehru Manipuri Dance Academy. He was also associated with various literary and cultural institutions, serving as President of the Manipuri Sahitya Parishad and the Manipuri Historical Society, among others. He was a member of expert committees for the Manipur State Kala Akademi and Manipur University, and represented Manipuri culture at numerous national and international forums. His efforts were instrumental in promoting Manipuri dance, as evidenced by his involvement in facilitating the teaching of the art form outside Manipur. He passed away on January 31, 2011, in Imphal, at the age of 90.
