Dr. Neela Zareen is an Indian classical dancer specializing in Kathak and Kuchipudi, based in New York, USA. She received her training in Kathak under Guru Smt. Prerana Deshpande and in Kuchipudi under Guru Smt. Sadhana Paranji, following the traditional guru-shishya parampara (master-disciple tradition). Zareen has performed for over two decades across New York City and beyond, participating in various festivals, community gatherings, and educational outreach programs in schools and colleges. She completed her Kuchipudi Rangapravesam on November 10, 2012, at Queens Theatre, earning the title Natya Tilakam. She also received the title “Dancing Flame” at a Kathak Guru Purnima performance in Pune, India. In 2019, Neela Zareen founded the Neela Dance Academy in Jackson Heights and Manhattan, where she teaches Kathak and Kuchipudi in their purest forms. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes purity of form and nurturing future performers, with her students regularly performing at community events. Beyond her artistic endeavors, Dr. Zareen is also a neuroscience researcher at the CUNY School of Medicine, holding a PhD in neurobiology from Columbia University. Her research focuses on repairing and reconnecting the brain to the spinal cord after injury, and she serves as an assistant adjunct professor in human genetics.
