Neelima Raju K is a distinguished exponent of Kuchipudi, an Indian classical dance form. Born in 1979, she commenced her dance training in 1985 and joined the prestigious Kuchipudi Kalakshetra in 1987. Under the tutelage of Guru Hari Rama Murthy and the legendary Padmabhushan Dr. Vempati Chinna Satyam, she honed her skills in this intricate art form. Raju graduated with a “Natya Visharada” degree in 2001, marking a significant milestone in her formal training. Her performing career began in 1991, initially as a junior dancer in Kuchipudi Kalakshetra's productions. By 1995, she had ascended to the rank of principal dancer. As an independent soloist, Neelima Raju has graced numerous prominent festivals, including Kuchipudi Mahotsav (1993), Nrityotsav (1996), Kuchipudi Nrityotsav (1997), and the Konark Music and Dance Festival (2002). She is recognized for her innovative choreography, which, while deeply rooted in traditional Kuchipudi, explores universal themes, utilizing the codified techniques of the dance tradition as a medium for self-expression. In 2001, Neelima Raju moved to the United States to pursue a doctoral degree in Genetics, while simultaneously continuing her professional dance career. She began teaching Kuchipudi in the US, inspiring students to connect with their culture through dance. She is currently a member of UNESCO's International Council of Dance. Her contributions to the art form extend to lecture demonstrations, including those for the Asian Studies Department at SUNY-Buffalo and the Albright Knox Art Gallery.
