Nepathya Vishnuprasad is an Indian classical dancer specializing in Koodiyattam, an ancient Sanskrit theatre form originating from Kerala, India. Koodiyattam holds significant cultural importance, having been recognized by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Vishnuprasad is closely associated with Nepathya, Moozhikulam, a distinguished center dedicated to the preservation and promotion of this art form. Located near an old Lakshmana temple in the historically significant village of Moozhikkulam, Nepathya has maintained a traditional theatre, or koothambalam, since 1998, upholding the renowned Ammanoor lineage of Kutiyattam. Under the leadership of Margi Madhu Chakyar, a recognized culture-bearer of this tradition, and Dr. Indu G., an accomplished performer, scholar, and teacher, Nepathya is committed to performing, teaching, and conducting research in Koodiyattam and related arts in a traditional style. Vishnuprasad actively contributes to this legacy through his performances. In February 2015, he was a featured performer at the seventh annual Koodiyattam festival organized by Nepathya, Moozhikulam. During this festival, he presented the 'Nirvahanam' on the third day, specifically in the context of 'Surpanakhankam,' which is the second act of 'Aascharya Choodamani'. His performance was particularly noted for his adeptness in 'Pakarnattam,' a technique where a single actor portrays multiple characters. Vishnuprasad skillfully enacted both Lakshmana and Rama, earning praise for his efforts. Koodiyattam performances, such as those by Vishnuprasad, are characterized by an elaborate vocabulary that includes intricate movements of the eyes, eyebrows, facial muscles, and hand gestures, allowing performers to create expansive spatial narratives on stage without the use of physical props. This dedication to detailed expression and the continuation of ancient theatrical techniques underscores Vishnuprasad's role within the Koodiyattam tradition.
