Nighat Chaudhry is a renowned Kathak classical dancer, born on February 24, 1954, in Lahore, Pakistan. She moved to London with her parents at the age of one. Her early dance training included ballet and contemporary dance. At 14, a pivotal encounter with the eminent Kathak dancer Nahid Siddiqui inspired her to embrace the classical forms of her own culture, leading her to abandon ballet and begin her intensive Kathak training. [1, 3] Driven by a desire to deeply understand the nuances of the Indian style, Chaudhry relocated to Pakistan. Her extensive Kathak education includes training under Nahid Siddiqui in London (1977-1983), Maharaj Ghulam Hussain Kathak in Lahore (1983-1987), and advanced studies with Pandit Durga Lal and Uma Durga at Kathak Kendra in Delhi (1988-1992). She also participated in workshops with Kumudini Lakhia and Saswati Sen, and earned a Grade-3 certificate under Pali Chandra Gurukul in Dubai. [1, 3, 5] With a career spanning over four decades, Nighat Chaudhry is celebrated for her Sufi & Mystique Kathak classical dance style. Her professional journey includes serving as a lead dancer in Nahid Siddiqui's Dance Company in London (1996) and as a director for the Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA) in 2001. [1, 12] She has held academic positions, creating dance syllabi and teaching at institutions like Lahore Grammar School (2010) and HeadStart School Islamabad (2012). Currently, she is a Professor of Practice in the Communication and Design Program at Habib University, where she teaches performing narratives and has developed courses on Pakistani dance arts and Kathak. [1, 3] As a cultural ambassador, Chaudhry has captivated audiences worldwide, blending traditional Kathak with contemporary expressions. In 2016, she established the Nighat Chaudhry Foundation (NCF), an NGO dedicated to reconnecting Pakistanis with their cultural identity and promoting performing arts education. The NCF also founded the Institute of Performing Arts (IPA) in Lahore in 2015. She is also the founder of the Kathak Souls dance company. [1, 4, 6, 8] Her significant contributions have been recognized with prestigious accolades, including the Pride of Performance Award from the President of Pakistan in 2018, the Nigar Award for Best Actress, and the Faiz Ahmad Faiz award.
