🪔 About
Nirmal Ch Jena is a distinguished figure in Indian classical Odissi dance, renowned for perpetuating the unique "Jena style" developed by his father, the late Guru Surendra Nath Jena. Born in the village of Utchapur in Orissa (now Odisha), Nirmal Jena received intensive training from his father in this distinct Odissi lineage, which is recognized for the depth of its basic positions, the undulating shape of its movement, and a solo-performance focus that explores the raudra and bibhatsa sentiments. His comprehensive artistic education also included North Indian vocal, Orissan vocal, Chhau dance, and instrumental music, specifically pakhawaj and mridang. Jena's career began with performances and workshops across various Indian cities. In 1984, he commenced co-teaching alongside his father at Triveni Kala Sangam in New Delhi. His international outreach started with a tour of Australia in 1989, funded by the Australia Council for the Arts, where he presented a series of performances and dance education programs in Sydney, Melbourne, and Canberra. The enthusiastic interest from dance enthusiasts led him to return to Australia in March 1992, where he established the Odissi Dance Company (ODC) in Sydney with his wife and associate director, Chitrita Mukerjee. ODC has since made a significant contribution to the promotion of quality Indian performing arts in Australia. Beyond ODC, Nirmal Jena co-founded the Arts & Life Education Gurukul (ALEG) with Chitrita Mukerjee, an Australian registered charity dedicated to supporting young people experiencing financial hardship through Odissi dance, music, and life skills. He continues to teach the Jena style of Odissi at his studios in eastern Sydney and the Blue Mountains, and also provides training to actors at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA). His teaching philosophy emphasizes Indian classical arts as pathways to deeper awareness, presence, discipline, beauty, and inner transformation, cultivating both artistic excellence and self-understanding.
