P.S. Swaminathan was a renowned Indian classical dance figure, a Bharatanatyam performer and teacher, deeply rooted in the Pandanallur style. He was a direct disciple of the legendary Pandanallur Meenakshisundaram Pillai, who is often hailed as the 'Father of Bharatanatyam' and attributed with shaping the Pandanallur style. Swaminathan, along with other prominent gurus like A.P. Chokkalingam Pillai, P.C. Subbaraya Pillai, and K.P. Kittappa Pillai, played a crucial role in perpetuating Meenakshisundaram Pillai's tradition. These gurus collectively were responsible for training a significant portion of Bharatanatyam dancers during their era, highlighting Swaminathan's considerable influence and legacy in the art form. His teaching career saw him impart the traditional Pandanallur style to numerous students, including notable dancers who went on to achieve international recognition. In the 1960s, he taught the granddaughter of then-President V.V. Giri in New Delhi. His workshops, such as one conducted at Kalakshetra, attracted esteemed dancers and teachers, eager to learn the traditional style directly from him. Swaminathan was known for his unwavering commitment to the traditional way of performing Bharatanatyam, emphasizing the strength and clarity of line, precise footwork, and grace, hallmarks of the Pandanallur style. He was based in India, with his work and influence extending from Pandanallur, the ancestral village of his guru, to major cultural centers like Chennai, where he conducted workshops.
