Pandanallur Jayalakshmi, also known as Rani Jayalakshmi Nachiyar, was a legendary Bharatanatyam dancer born in 1930 into a traditional dancing community. She was a foremost exponent of the Pandanallur style of Bharatanatyam, a bani characterized by precise footwork, graceful lines, and a balanced integration of pure dance (nritta) and expressive storytelling (abhinaya). Jayalakshmi received her training from the illustrious Guru Meenakshisundaram Pillai, often referred to as 'Thatha,' from an early age. Her arangetram (debut performance) took place at the age of eight in the Pasupatheeswara temple in Pandanallur. She quickly gained a reputation for her dazzling technique, precise movements, fluid grace, evocative abhinaya, and sparkling tempo, becoming known as the most talented dancer taught by her guru. Jayalakshmi enjoyed a glorious performance career spanning approximately 15 years, during which she performed at temple festivals, weddings, sabhas in Madras (now Chennai), and royal palaces across South India and Bombay. Her guru, Meenakshisundaram Pillai, even composed a special Varnam in the raga Vachaspathi in praise of Raja Shanmukha Rajendra Sethupati of Ramanathapuram for her to perform. In 1946, she married Raja Shanmukha Rajendra Sethupati and became his youngest queen. Following her marriage, Jayalakshmi gracefully retired from the performance stage, believing it would bring greater dignity to her art and reputation. She passed away in Chennai in March 2017, leaving behind a legacy where her name remains synonymous with the Pandanallur bani.
