Pandanallur C. Subbaraya Pillai (December 7, 1914 – May 12, 2008) was a towering figure in Indian classical dance, renowned for his mastery and preservation of the Pandanallur style of Bharatanatyam. Born in the village of Pandanallur in the Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu, India, he hailed from a distinguished lineage of nattuvanars, often referred to as the "First Family" of nattuvanars, with direct access to the compositions of the Tanjore Quartet. Subbaraya Pillai received his rigorous training as an apprentice nattuvanar under his illustrious grandfather, Meenakshisundaram Pillai (1869–1964), and his father, Chokkalingam Pillai (1893–1968). He began his career at a young age, accompanying his grandfather's students as a vocalist and assisting in nattuvangam. He later moved to Madras (now Chennai) with his father, where they jointly taught at a school in Egmore. After his father's passing, he continued to teach at a school in Kilpauk and, even in his eighties, maintained his teaching practice at his home. As a staunch traditionalist, Subbaraya Pillai was dedicated to upholding the purity and integrity of the Pandanallur style, emphasizing proper *paddhati* (tradition) with perfectly aligned rhythmical nuances and intricate musical elements. He was known for his aversion to contemporary choreography and fads, choosing instead to work within the inherited framework of his family's heritage. His profound understanding of the link between music and *adavu* (basic dance steps) patterns was a hallmark of his teaching. Among his many notable students were celebrated dancers such as Alarmel Valli, Meenakshi Chitharanjan, Prema Satish, Jayalakshmi Satagopan, and Nirmala Ramachandran. His granddaughters, G. Vasumathy and G. Vanitha, were also trained by him as dancers and nattuvanars.
