Pasumarthy Rattaiah Sarma is a revered figure in Indian classical dance, specifically known as a Yaskagana Kulapathi (master of Yakshagana) and a dedicated practitioner of Kuchipudi Yakshagana, the traditional dance-drama form from which Kuchipudi evolved. Born into one of the traditional Bhagavathalu families of Kuchipudi village in Andhra Pradesh, he represents a vital link between the historical glory of Kuchipudi Yakshaganam and its contemporary practice. His family has a deep-rooted connection to the art form; his father, Pasumarthi Viswanatham, and uncle were involved in singing, nattuvangam, and performing as Sutradharas. Maternal relatives include notable figures like Vedantam Prahlada Sarma and Vedantam Satyanarayana Sarma. Pasumarthy Rattaiah Sarma was initiated into the art at the tender age of four, where he began learning music, rhythms, and Sanskrit, alongside stories from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Bhagavatham. He emphasizes the importance of in-depth knowledge of literature and mythology for effective character portrayal in performances. As of November 2025, he is 85 years old and continues his unwavering efforts to preserve and transmit the legacy of Kuchipudi Yakshagana, teaching students the intricacies of this art form where dance, music, and drama converge.
