🪔 About

Pavithra Ravi is an Indian classical dancer and teacher based in Christchurch, New Zealand, where she founded and runs the Zealand Academy of Indian Arts (ZAIA). She offers classes in various Indian classical dance forms, including Bharatanatyam and Kathak, as well as music and instruments. Pavithra comes from a family with a strong artistic heritage; her great grandfathers, the Thiruveezhimizhalai brothers, were renowned nadaswaram vidwans, and both her grandfathers received state awards for their contributions to classical arts. Her mother initiated her Bharatanatyam training at a very young age. Pavithra made her public debut in 1998 at the prestigious Mamallapuram International Dance Festival. Beyond dance, she is also proficient in Carnatic vocal music, yoga for mental health, and sound bath facilitation. She and her husband relocated to Christchurch, establishing ZAIA's dedicated studio space in 2021, to further spread Indian arts within the community. She is actively involved in preserving and promoting Indian cultural heritage among Kiwi-Indians.
