Poovalur Sriji, whose full name is P.A. Venkataraman, is a highly acclaimed and prolific figure in the realm of South Indian Classical music, particularly as a mridangam artist, composer, and educator. He is recognized as an 'A' top grade artist by All India Radio, a testament to his mastery and contribution to the art form. Sriji received his foundational training in South Indian Classical music from his father, also named P.A. Venkataraman, who was a disciple of the legendary mridangam maestro Palani Subramania Pillai. With a career spanning over four decades, Poovalur Sriji has performed extensively with leading artists from both the South and North Indian Classical traditions, showcasing his versatility and deep understanding of rhythmic complexities. Following his relocation to the United States, he expanded his artistic collaborations, performing and recording with a diverse array of international musicians such as Sir Yehudi Menuhin, Bela Fleck, Mark O' Connor, John Bergamo, and Glen Velez. His innovative approach is evident in his numerous compositions that skillfully portray South Indian idioms. A significant highlight of his career includes a Grammy nomination for his album "Tabula Rasa," where he collaborated as a composer and performer with Bela Fleck, V. M. Bhatt, and J.P. Chen. Beyond his performance career, Poovalur Sriji is a dedicated educator and institution builder. He is a founding member of the group 'Brahmah' and has founded and currently directs 'SNEW' and the 'South Indian Cross Cultural Ensemble'. He holds a faculty position at the University of North Texas and has previously served as faculty at prestigious institutions like Calarts and San Diego State University, imparting his knowledge and expertise to the next generation of musicians. His contributions have earned him several awards from leading institutions, solidifying his status as a renowned guru and legend in the field of Carnatic music and its accompaniment to Indian classical dance.
