Guru Raghunath Dutta is a revered figure in Indian classical dance, primarily recognized for his profound contributions to Odissi. He commenced his artistic journey in 1940 with the Annapurna Theatre. His dedication to Odissi led him to study under various esteemed gurus at the Kala Vikash Kendra in Cuttack. Over a significant period, he served as the head of the Department of Odissi Dance at this institution, playing a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of dancers. Throughout his illustrious career, Guru Raghunath Dutta trained numerous young dancers in Cuttack and extensively traveled both within India and internationally, disseminating the art form. His profound impact on Odissi is evident through the recognition he received, including the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1995, India's highest honor in the performing arts. He was also honored with the Guru Deba Prasad Das Award in 2009. His teaching legacy is carried forward by many accomplished disciples. His daughter, Pratibha Jena, is among those he trained in Odissi. Renowned Odissi dancer Ramani Ranjan Jena also received training from Guru Raghunath Dutta at Kala Vikas Kendra. Another prominent student, Aloka Kanungo, an acclaimed Odissi dancer and head of Shinjan Nrityalaya in Kolkata, annually organizes a "Shradhanjali" (tribute) in his memory, acknowledging his significant contribution and expressing gratitude for his mentorship. Dipti Mallik, a Kalashree Awardee and founder of NrityaTara School of Odissi Dance in the Bay Area, also credits Guru Raghunath Dutta as one of her formative teachers. These tributes and the continued work of his students underscore his enduring influence as a guru and a legend in the field of Odissi dance.
