🪔 About

Rajani Maibi was a revered figure in Indian classical dance, particularly recognized for her profound contributions to Manipuri dance. She was a recipient of the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship in 1975, the highest honor conferred by India's National Academy of Music, Dance, and Drama, acknowledging her lifelong dedication and artistic excellence in the performing arts. As a 'Maibi,' a priestess-oracle in Manipur, Rajani Maibi was central to the ancient ritualistic dance tradition known as Maibi Jagoi, performed during the Lai Haraoba festival. Maibis are chosen by fate and undergo rigorous training in the intricate dances, music, chanting, and complex ritual procedures associated with these shamanic practices. Her performances embodied the spiritual rituals of Manipur, depicting the cosmogony of the Meitei people and their way of life, including the creation of the earth and various human occupations. Rajani Maibi's influence extended to her role as the head of Lai Haraoba training at the Jawaharlal Nehru Dance Akademi in Imphal, Manipur, an institution affiliated with the central Sangeet Natak Akademi. Through this position, she played a crucial role in preserving and transmitting the traditional knowledge and artistry of Manipuri ritual dance to future generations. Among her notable students was the American Odissi and Manipuri dancer Sharon Lowen, who studied under the legendary Rajani Maibi. Her work ensured the continuity of the sacred Maibi Jagoi, a dance form deeply intertwined with the cultural and religious heritage of Manipur. Awards & Honours: Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship (1975).
