🪔 About
C. R. Raman Namboodiri was a prominent Kathakali actor and teacher, born on 16 Karkitakam 1090 ME (corresponding to 1915 CE) in Cheruvally Illam of Aalapuramkara in Ernakulam district, Kerala, India. Although a southerner by birth, he was considered a northerner in Kathakali circles due to his major training under Vaazhenkada Kunchu Nair. His initiation into Kathakali, known as "Kacha Kettal," began during his school days. He underwent rigorous training after moving to his mother's Illam in Perunthalakkaat, Kongad, Palakkad district, under the tutelage of Kunchu Nair. He also received instruction from Pattikkaamthody Ravunni Menon for a period. Namboodiri was associated with institutions like Kalaamandalam and P V S Naatyasangham, Kottakkal. He was regarded as a prime ("Aadyavasaanam") actor, primarily known for portraying white-beard ("Vella Thaadi") and black-beard ("Karutha Thaadi") characters, as well as "Minukku Vesham." In addition to his performing career, C. R. Raman Namboodiri also trained students at home for a while, contributing to the teaching legacy of Kathakali.
