🪔 About
Rashmi Jangam is a prominent Indian classical Kathak dancer, teacher, and choreographer, deeply rooted in the Lucknow tradition. Born on August 28, 1979, into a family of performing artists, she represents the third generation carrying forward this artistic legacy; her grandfather, Shri Babanrao alias B Swami, was an organ player with Natangit Maestro Balandharvaji, and her brother, Bharat Jangam, is a tabla player. Rashmi Jangam began her Kathak training at a young age and further honed her skills at Kalachhaya, a renowned dance school in Pune, under the tutelage of Guru Prabha Marathe, a Gandabandh Shagird of Pandit Birju Maharaj. As a principal dancer of a troupe at Kalachhaya, Jangam has garnered significant acclaim for her performances, both nationally and internationally. Pandit Birju Maharaj himself commended her for her natural sense of grace and rhythm after witnessing her performance at the National Kathak Festival in New Delhi. Her international performances include venues in Rome and Milan, Italy, and various locations across the United States, such as the Iyenger Yoga Centre in Denver, Columbia College Chicago, the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, Berklee College of Music in Boston, and the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. In India, she has performed at the Sangeet Natak Akademi in New Delhi and the Swarna Nritya Prabha Festival in Baroda. Beyond her performing career, Rashmi Jangam is a dedicated teacher at Kalachhaya, having taught there for approximately 20 years as of 2021. She holds a master's degree in psychology and is actively exploring the integration of Kathak with psychology, developing concepts for using dance as a therapeutic aid. She has also choreographed several pieces and was involved in organizing the 'Kavya Nritya Unmesh' festival in 2015 during Kalachhaya's golden jubilee year, which featured dancers of various styles.
