Rathna Kumar, affectionately known as 'Rathna Papa' during her childhood, is an internationally renowned Indian classical dancer, choreographer, and teacher specializing in Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi. Born into a family of musicians and writers, she began her dance journey as a child prodigy. She received her initial Bharatanatyam training from Guru K.J. Sarasa, who accepted her as her first student. Her Kuchipudi training commenced under gurus Vedantam Jagannatha Sharma and Vempati Pedda Satyam, and she later refined her technique under the tutelage of the legendary Vempati Chinna Satyam at the Kuchipudi Art Academy in Chennai. Kumar performed extensively across India from a very young age and emerged as a front-ranking Kuchipudi dancer in the 1970s. In 1975, she moved to Houston, Texas, USA, after her marriage. That same year, she established the Anjali Center for Performing Arts, which became the first Indian dance school in Texas and one of the earliest in the United States. She further contributed to the promotion of Indian performing arts by founding the Samskriti Society for Indian Performing Arts in Houston in 1994. Since 2002, she has also served as a Dance Instructor at Rice University. A recipient of the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2011 for her contributions to Kuchipudi dance, Rathna Kumar has also received National Endowment for the Arts Grants for Heritage & Preservation and Arts Learning. She has authored two books on the basic techniques of Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi, titled 'Adavu' and 'Kuchipudi Adavu Sammu'. Over her extensive career, she has trained more than 2000 students from diverse backgrounds. In 2026, Rathna Kumar completes 75 remarkable years in dance, continuing to advocate for the preservation of Kuchipudi's distinctive identity and the importance of a strong foundation in classical forms.
