Roberta Cavicchioli is an Italian artist, dancer, researcher, teacher, and choreographer, primarily known for her work in Indian classical dance, specifically Bharatanatyam and Bharatanrityam. She is the founder and artistic director of Anabasi arteinmovimento, a project dedicated to the dissemination of dance and oriental arts in Milan, Italy. Cavicchioli began her classical dance training at the age of seven in Teramo, continuing for 16 years in Milan. She also studied contemporary dance, Argentine tango, and theatre dance. Her journey into Indian arts began in 2006 when she encountered India. In 2008, she commenced her formal study of Bharatanatyam with Monica Gallarate. She furthered her training in India, attending workshops and residential seminars in Chennai, Kerala, and Mumbai. Her teachers include notable artists such as Mavin Khoo, Apoorva Jayaraman, Leela Samson, Mary John Kalamandalam, Sangeeta Isvaran, Hemabharathy Palani, Giovanna Leva, and Dominique Delorme. With some of these masters, she delved into Bharatanrityam, a style developed by Padma Subrahmanyam that integrates traditional Bharatanatyam with research into temple sculptures and Karanas. Through Anabasi arteinmovimento, Cavicchioli creates and performs Indian dance and theatre-dance productions, often integrating related art forms like Kalaripayattu (Indian martial art), yoga, and classical and contemporary dance. Her artistic research explores the connection between classical Indian tradition and contemporary Indian dance, evident in her theatrical performances.
