Roma Thakore is a prominent figure in Indian classical dance, particularly Bharatanatyam, based in Calgary, Canada. She earned her Bachelor of Arts with a focus on classical dance from Nalanda Dance Academy, affiliated with the University of Bombay, in 1982. Thakore began her teaching career in 1985, establishing a dance program at the School of East Indian Languages and Performing Arts, where she taught Bharatanatyam and traditional folk dances of India for 13 years. In 1987, she founded Kala Bhavan of Calgary, an Indian classical dance school that offers classes in Bharatanatyam, Indian folk, and fusion dance styles. As the artistic director of Kala Bhavan of Calgary, Roma Thakore has been instrumental in promoting Indian performing arts in Calgary and has staged numerous successful productions. She has performed and taught for various organizations, including the Bengali Association, Hindu Society, Gujarati Mandal, Marathi Association, SICA, Telugu Association, Tamil Association, and Raag Mala Music Society. Thakore has also actively supported the local community, performing for events like Heritage Day and Canada Day, and has been involved with GlobalFest through the India Canada Association (INCA). She has served as program coordinator for INCA and SAHALA's annual Multi Cultural Night and has held positions as Vice-President and President of the Gujarati Mandal of Calgary. Her collaborative efforts extend to working with groups and dancers such as Divya Unni, Firenze Flamenco, Arabia Adorned, and independent musicians across Canada. In 2019, Roma Thakore was nominated for the Immigrants of Distinction Awards, presented by Immigrant Services Calgary, for her contributions to the community and culture.
