Sadanam Narayanan Namboodiri, affectionately known as Narippatta, was a highly renowned Kathakali maestro and guru from Kerala, India. Born in 1947 in Narippatta Mana of Karalmanna, Palakkad district, he dedicated his life to the classical dance-drama form of Kathakali. His initial training in Kathakali began at home under the tutelage of Govindan Bhattathirippad and Chethalloor Kuttappanicker. He later pursued higher studies at the esteemed Sadanam Kathakali Academy, where he was profoundly mentored and groomed by the legendary Kathakali Guru Padmasree Keezhpatam Kumaran Nair, who was his main "Aasaan". During his student years, Namboodiri was recognized for his talent, receiving a Central Government scholarship, a junior fellowship, and a State Government gold medal. Throughout his illustrious career, Sadanam Narayanan Namboodiri became a leading figure in the Kathakali repertoire, known for his creative brilliance and masterly precision on stage. He was an ardent follower and active proponent of the Kalluvazhi Chitta, a traditional style of Kathakali. His versatility allowed him to excel in a wide array of characters, including Pacha, Kathi, Minukku, and Vellathaadi. Beyond performing, Namboodiri made significant contributions to the art form through his choreographic innovations, developing new mudras for "Nalacharitham" and choreographic methodologies for productions such as "Darukavadhom," "Vamanavatharam," "Balidanam," and "Bhaktikeerthi". As a dedicated educator, he served as a visiting faculty member at the School of Drama, Calicut University, and imparted his knowledge at various institutions including Sadanam Kathakali Academy, Keralakalakendram, Asthikalayam, and Nrithyopada Creative Ensemble. His influence extended internationally through workshops for European artists organized by prestigious bodies like Kerala Kalamandalam, Prana Company, and ARTE, Paris, and he trained several overseas students. Sadanam Narayanan Namboodiri's contributions were recognized with several accolades, including the Kerala Sangeeta Nataka Akademi's Gurupuja Award and the Kerala Kalamandalam Fellowship for excellence in art. He also featured in numerous films and documentaries, such as "Nottam" (a documentary on Guru Padmasree Keezhpadam Kumaran Nair) and "Kaliyarangathe Kalapam," and played the titular role in the acclaimed socio-political TV series "Munshi". Sadanam Narayanan Namboodiri passed away on October 23, 2024, at the age of 77, in Karalmanna, Kerala, leaving behind a rich legacy of artistic purity and dedication to Kathakali.
