Sanjukta Barooah is a well-known Indian classical dancer specializing in Sattriya Nritya, an ancient dance form originating from Assam, India. Born into a family with a unique blend of sports and business, she is also the great-great-granddaughter of Maniram Dewan, a significant historical figure from Assam. Barooah commenced her formal training in Sattriya in 1999, a year before the dance form received national recognition as a major classical dance of India. Her extensive training began under the tutelage of Sangeet Natak Academy award winner Guru Indira P. P. Bora at Kalabhumi in Assam, where she continued her studies until 2008. Following this, she further honed her skills under the guidance of Padmashri Jatin Goswami. From 2009 to 2013, Barooah also received training from Bhabananda Barbayan, a bhakat (monk) of Uttar Kamalabari sattra. A significant milestone in her career was her Ranga Pravesha (Sattriya Dance Graduation Ceremony), which took place on March 27, 2011, at the India International Centre in New Delhi. This event marked the first Sattriya Ranga Pravesha to be held in the capital, highlighting her pioneering role in bringing the art form to a wider audience. Sanjukta Barooah is established in Delhi as a full-time dance professional, dedicated to preserving and promoting the more than 550-year-old living tradition of Sattriya dance.
