🪔 About

Santhosh Kumar Thamang, affectionately known as 'Mama', is an Indian classical dancer and guru specializing in Bharatanatyam. He has carved a significant niche for himself in the classical dance world. His journey in dance began at a young age, actively participating in cultural activities during school and developing a strong urge to pursue classical dance by the 4th or 5th standard. He initially received brief training from a local teacher before meeting his primary guru, D.K. Narayan, a retired principal from a music and dance college. Santhosh Kumar Thamang underwent 18 years of rigorous training under D.K. Narayan, including a period of gurukula vasam. Following his graduation, he dedicated himself entirely to dance and, on his guru's advice, pursued a Master's degree at the University of Hyderabad. In 2012, he founded Shree Narayani Natyalaya, a renowned institution in Serilingampally, Hyderabad, dedicated to teaching traditional Bharatanatyam. The school adheres to the Pandanallur style of Bharatanatyam, emphasizing precision and authenticity. As a male dancer, Thamang has reflected on the challenges faced in the field, particularly the struggle for sustained performance opportunities. Awards & Honours: Dance India Young Dance Teacher Award.
