K.V. Satyanarayana is a world-renowned Indian classical dancer, choreographer, lyricist, composer, and film dance director, primarily known for his mastery of Kuchipudi. Born Karothi Venkata Satyanarayana on September 26, 1957, he developed a passion for dance from childhood, particularly inspired by the character of Satyabhama. His formal training in Kuchipudi included tutelage under esteemed gurus such as Korada Narasimha Rao, who taught him significant Kuchipudi items like Bhamakalapam and Mohini Bhasmasura, and Vedantam Prahlada Sarma. He also participated in a three-month workshop conducted by the legendary Padma Bhushan awardee Vempati Chinna Satyam. Satyanarayana established the Sri Satya Kuchipudi and Janapada Nritya Academy in Eluru, India, in 1982, to impart his knowledge in both classical and folk dances. Since 1989, he has extensively toured the United States, performing and teaching Kuchipudi, and also founded the Sri Satya Kuchipudi Academy in the USA. He has been appointed "Asthana Natyacharya" for the Sri Lakshmi Narayana Temple in Youngstown, Ohio, and the Sri Shiridi Sai Baba Temple in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His contributions extend to film choreography, where he served as dance director for acclaimed Indian movies like "Sruthilayalu," "Swarnakamalam," "Sutradharulu," and "Swathikiranam". He is also a prolific lyricist and composer, with his original compositions released as "Kuchipudi Natya Sowrabhalu" audio cassettes, and has authored several dance scripts and books, including the folk dance ballet "Mallika". His versatile artistic journey also includes a notable stint as a theatre artist, often portraying female roles, for which he won the Best Actress Award in an intercollegiate drama competition.
