Seema Rao is the Creative Director of Guru G V Ramani Natya Kala Foundation (GVRNKF) Dallas, a Bharatanatyam dance school she founded in 2018. She is the senior-most disciple of GVRNKF and has been associated with her guru, Smt. Gayatri Subramanian, since 1987. Rao presented her Arangetram, or maiden stage performance, in 1993. Her specialization lies in "bhava" or "abhinaya," enabling her to flawlessly portray various characters and emotions. She has been a part of numerous dance productions by her academy, including Kutrala Kuravanji, Andal Kalyanam, Krishna Leela, Panchakanya, and Ramayanam. Rao began assisting her guru and teaching students independently in 2000. Her training includes aspects of Natyashastra under scholar Piyal Bhattacharya, nuances of Bharatanatyam, Kummi, Kolattam, and the basics of Nattuvangam from Guru Smt. Rajee Narayan. She also learned extensively in workshops with Smt. Shobana Bhalchandra, Director of Bharata Kalanjali Chennai, and for a year under Smt. Leela Samson. Beyond teaching, Seema Rao leads GVRNKF in organizing two annual festivals, UTSAV and Margazhi, and is a sought-after master of ceremonies in Dallas dance circles, proficient in English, Hindi, Marathi, Kannada, and Tamil. She also co-chairs the Dallas Adavu club, an initiative started in March 2023 to foster collaboration among Natyam practitioners in the DFW Metroplex. She balances her artistic pursuits with a career as a Program Manager at Charles Schwab in Dallas.
