Shanta Rao (c. 1925 – December 28, 2007) was an influential Indian classical dancer, renowned for her mastery across multiple forms, including Bharatanatyam, Kathakali, Mohiniyattam, Kuchipudi, and Sri Lankan Kandyan dance traditions. Born in Bombay (now Mumbai) into a Saraswat Brahmin family, her parents were active freedom fighters, fostering a culturally vibrant environment that exposed her to diverse artistic traditions from an early age. Her formal dance education began in 1939 when she became the first female student at Kerala Kalamandalam, where she rigorously trained in Kathakali under Guru P. Ramunni Menon and Mohiniyattam with Krishnan Panikkar. She made her Kathakali debut in Thrissur in 1940. Rao also traveled to Sri Lanka to learn Kandyan dance under Guru Gunaya. For Bharatanatyam, she trained under the esteemed Guru Meenakshisundaram Pillai of the Pandanallur style, making her debut in 1943 at the Madras Museum Theatre. She was recognized for her vigorous, powerful, and dynamic interpretations, often noted for their "masculine" energy. In the 1960s, Rao explored Kuchipudi, studying under Vempati Chinna Satyam and briefly collaborating with him to establish a dance academy in Madras. She also formulated her own style, "Bhama Nrityam" (or Bhama Natyam), inspired by Venkatachalapathi Sastri and Bhamasutram rituals. Her career included extensive international tours and performances before dignitaries such as Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Although she largely withdrew from public life later, she performed at the Sangeet Natak Akademi's Swarna Jayanti Mahotsava in Delhi in 1997.
