Sharadini Gole is a highly respected Indian classical Kathak dancer and guru, recognized as the seniormost disciple of the renowned Kathak exponent, Pandita Rohini Bhate. Born around 1932, Gole began her dance journey at the tender age of seven, initially learning basic movements from various teachers. Her profound interest in dance was solidified when, around the age of 15 or 16, she commenced her intensive training under Rohini Bhate, affectionately known as "Babytai". Gole credits Bhate's comprehensive personality and training for shaping her dance skills, and she continued to teach and perform for 40 years, upholding Bhate's principles of abhinaya and grace. Based in Pune, India, Sharadini Gole has made significant contributions as a performer, teacher, and choreographer. She has graced numerous stages with her solo and group performances, including notable appearances at the Sawai Gandharva festival around 1970-72, and various festivals in Jaipur and Delhi. Her expertise has led to invitations from Kathak Kendra, Delhi, to conduct workshops, and the Sangeet Natak Akademi has preserved her artistry through archival recordings of seven Kathak items. Gole is also recognized for her creative choreographic works, which include ballets on unique themes such as "jatra or a village fair" and "Geetopadesha," and a distinctive portrayal of Mandavi, the wife of Bharat. Furthermore, she is credited with creating two original taals, one of nine and a half matra and another of eleven matra. As a dedicated educator, Sharadini Gole has taught Kathak for many years at Nrityabharati, an institution founded by her guru, Rohini Bhate, and has also established her own classes as a tribute to Bhate's extensive work in Kathak. Her commitment to teaching is evident as her former students continue to seek her guidance. She remains an active figure in the Kathak world, inspiring new generations of dancers.
