Dr. Shashi Sankhla, born on October 28, 1948, in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, is a distinguished exponent of the Jaipur gharana of Kathak dance. She is recognized as a Kathak Maestro and a living legend, celebrated for her profound contributions to Indian classical dance. Sankhla began her Kathak training under the guidance of Pandit Mool Chand Gometi and Pandit Mohan Lal. She was subsequently groomed by the legendary Kathak maestro Pandit Kundan Lal Gangani of the Jaipur gharana, becoming his senior disciple. Her comprehensive artistic education also includes Bharatanatyam from Ms. Pratibha Pandit, Hindustani Classical Vocal from Pandit B.N. Kshirsagar, Pakhawaj from Pandit Badrinarayan Pareek, and Rajasthani folk dances from Master Kasimji. She gave her debut performance at the age of nine. Dr. Sankhla commenced her teaching career at the age of 18 in 1967 at the Rashtriya Kala Mandal in Jodhpur. In 1978, she joined the Jaipur Kathak Kendra, an autonomous body of the Government of Rajasthan, as a Kathak Nritya Guru. She served this institution for 28 years, eventually becoming its Principal from 2003 until her retirement in 2006. With over 40 years of teaching experience, she has trained numerous students, including international disciples. She is known for her innovative approach, particularly in blending the Rajasthani folk singing style "Maand" with Kathak's abhinaya (expressive dance). Her choreographic works include acclaimed dance ballets such as Panihaari, Radharani, Chaunsar, Dashaavtaar, Gangaur, Rajputani, Kesariya Balam, and Ghoomar. Post-retirement, she founded institutions like Geetanjali Music Society and Tilak Sangeet Kendra to continue imparting Kathak training. She has also authored a book titled "Mand: Kathak Nritya mein Abhinay ka ek Sashakta Madhyam."
