🪔 About

Shoba Natarajan is an acclaimed Indian classical dancer, recognized as one of the foremost exponents of both Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi. Her artistic journey began at the age of five, receiving initial Bharatanatyam training under the legendary Padma Bhushan Kamala. She made her formal stage debut, or arangetram, at the age of eight. Subsequently, she continued her intensive Bharatanatyam tutelage with the reputed guru Kalaimamani S. K. Rajaratnam, mastering the vibrant Vazhuvoor style. Fascinated by Kuchipudi, Shoba Natarajan commenced her training in this style at age ten under the world-renowned Padma Bhushan Dr. Vempati Chinna Satyam, becoming one of his senior disciples and playing lead roles in many of his dance ballets, most notably as Srinivasa in 'Srinivasa Kalyanam'. She is also an accomplished Carnatic vocalist, having received training from eminent teachers Dr. B. Rajam Iyer and Dr. S. R. Janakiraman. Shoba Natarajan has significantly contributed to the global popularization of Indian classical dance. In March 1984, she became the first Kuchipudi dancer to tour the USSR. She toured the USA with Dr. Vempati Chinna Satyam's troupe in the summer of 1984 and returned for solo performances and workshops in 1986. Her international performances include tours to Manila (1987), the Festival of India in the USSR (1987), the Sixth World Tamil Conference in Malaysia (1987), and a solo tour of Finland and Estonia in 1995. She was also a lead dancer in the International Dance Alliance's 'Krishnam Vande Jagadgurum' tour of the USA and Canada in 1992. In 2016, she presented Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam and conducted a Kuchipudi workshop in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Her performances are celebrated for their spiritual depth, emotive range, sensitivity, classical purity, and mastery of abhinaya, form, and footwork. As a dedicated teacher and choreographer, Shoba Natarajan has choreographed numerous group presentations and dance dramas for her students and conducts workshops and training camps. She is a founder-member of Nrityaranga, a dance cooperative in Madras (Chennai) established in 1978, dedicated to encouraging young dancers. She is also the founder and artistic director of the Samskriti Foundation, a non-profit institute for the promotion of Indian dance, music, and culture, established in Naperville, Illinois, USA, in 1996. Awards & Honours: Yuva Kala Bharati (1992), Natanamamani (1994), Durham Arts Council Performers Award (1994), North Carolina Arts Council Fellowship Award for Choreography (1995), Master-Apprentice Fellowship (1997), Top Artiste grading.
