Shoba Natarajan is a distinguished Indian classical dancer, recognized as a leading exponent of both Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi. Her artistic journey began at the tender age of five, receiving initial Bharatanatyam training under the tutelage of the legendary Kamala, and performing her arangetram at age eight. She further honed her Bharatanatyam skills through rigorous training with the esteemed guru S. K. Rajaratnam, becoming a prominent advocate of the vibrant Vazhuvoor Style, known for her sophisticated abhinaya, mastery of form, and precise footwork. Natarajan also became a senior disciple of the renowned Kuchipudi guru, Dr. Vempati Chinna Satyam, from whom she began learning at age ten. She played lead roles in many of his dance ballets, notably portraying Srinivasa in "Srinivasa Kalyanam." Her soul-stirring Kuchipudi recitals have garnered international acclaim. Shoba Natarajan made history in 1984 as the first Kuchipudi dancer to tour the USSR. She has since undertaken extensive international tours across the USA, Russia, Europe, Southeast Asia, and South America, conducting performances and workshops. Beyond her performance career, Natarajan is an accomplished teacher and choreographer. She founded Samskriti, a non-profit institute dedicated to the promotion of Indian dance, music, and culture. She is also a trained Carnatic vocalist, having studied under Dr. B. Rajam Iyer and Dr. S. R. Janakiraman, and has composed music for her dance productions. Her teaching approach emphasizes traditional Indian values, inspiring students to excel while fostering social responsibility.
