🪔 About
Shweta Rao is recognized as one of Bharatanatyam's leading young dancers in the current generation, demonstrating a profound dedication to Indian classical dance. Hailing from Bengaluru, India, her artistic journey commenced at the tender age of five, deeply influenced by her parents' ardent passion for the arts. Her mother, Dr. Suparna Venkatesh, has served as a Bharatanatyam teacher for many years, while her father, Sai Venkatesh, has contributed to the classical dance landscape as a renowned specialist in stage and light design for over three decades, and is the founder of Sai Arts International. This rich artistic environment provided a strong foundation for Shweta's upbringing. At a remarkably young age, Shweta Rao has achieved mastery in two distinct classical Indian dance forms: Bharatanatyam and Kathak. She began learning Kathak at the age of twelve from the Natya Institute of Kathak. She is currently refining her skills under the esteemed guidance of Guru Smt. Priyadarsini Govind. Her performances are noted for their captivating blend of crisp movements, fluid grace, and energetic dynamism, creating a unique and enthralling experience for audiences. Expanding her artistic vocabulary beyond classical Indian traditions, Shweta has also undertaken training in Kalaripayattu, a traditional martial art form, and successfully completed a diploma in Contemporary Dance Studies from the prestigious Trinity Laban Conservatory of Music and Dance in London. Her educational pursuits include a Master's degree in Bharatanatyam from Bangalore University. Her burgeoning talent has been acknowledged through numerous awards and accolades. Since 2004, she has been a scholarship holder from the Centre for Cultural Resources and Training (CCRT) in Bharatanatyam. Her achievements include the Naatyavedha award, presented in Bengaluru in 2014, and the Sathyabhama award, received in Visakhapatnam in 2015. Furthermore, in 2015, she was recognized as a graded artiste by Doordarshan for both Bharatanatyam and Kathak, signifying her proficiency and recognition in national broadcasting. In 2025, Bharatanatyam dancer Shweta Venkatesh received the Natya Mohana Prathibha Award. Shweta Rao harbors aspirations of becoming a prominent ambassador for dance, aiming to perform at esteemed dance festivals and share her knowledge by teaching at institutions such as Sai Arts International, where she also assists her mother in training students. She has also actively participated in significant cultural initiatives, including the "Why I Dance" campaign organized by Kalanidhi Dance and IndianRaga.
