Sikkil Ramaswami Pillai was a distinguished figure in Indian classical dance, primarily recognized for his profound contributions as a noted nattuvanar and a dedicated dance instructor in Bharatanatyam. His significant impact on the art form was officially acknowledged when he received the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1972. This esteemed national honor, bestowed by India's National Academy of Music, Dance, and Drama, represents the highest recognition for individuals in the field of performing arts in India. Hailing from the town of Sikkil, situated between Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam, Ramaswami Pillai was born into an Isai Vellalar Pillai family, a community with a long-standing tradition in music. His deep-rooted connection to the arts was evident early on, as he initiated his maternal grandson, Sikkil R. Bhaskaran, into the world of music. Furthermore, he served as Bhaskaran's dance instructor during his time at the Shakti Nataka Sabha, a theatre company known for scouting talented children. A pivotal moment in his career came in 1960 when Ramaswami Pillai joined the Triveni Kala Sangam in Delhi. At this prominent institution, he continued to impart his extensive knowledge and expertise in dance, shaping the skills of many aspiring artists. His teaching legacy is notably carried forward by his disciples, including the renowned dancer Rajika Puri, who identifies as his shishya.
