Shri Sikkil R. Ramaswami Pillai, born in 1888 in Sikkal, Thanjavur District, India, was a distinguished figure in Indian classical dance. He received his Bharatanatyam training from various leading exponents of his time, notably Smt. Bhramarambal Ammal, a renowned Devadasi from Tiruvarur. Ramaswami Pillai was highly regarded not only as a Nattuvanar, a teacher and conductor of Bharatanatyam, but also as a dancer himself. His career saw him teaching in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) and New Delhi. In 1960, he joined the Triveni Kala Sangam in Delhi. He also served as a dance instructor at the Shakti Nataka Sabha in Pudukkottai. He was the maternal grandfather and initial guide in music and dance for the eminent Carnatic violinist Sikkil R. Bhaskaran. His teaching legacy includes a number of leading Bharatanatyam dancers. For his significant contributions to the enrichment of dance, Sikkil R. Ramaswami Pillai was honored with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Bharata Natyam in 1972. Awards & Honours: Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Bharata Natyam (1972).
