Sindhu Mishra is a revered figure in Indian classical dance, primarily known for her contributions to Bharatanatyam as a performer, teacher, guru, and choreographer. She began her journey in Bharatanatyam in 1966, having initially explored Kathak before dedicating herself to Bharatanatyam. Mishra received her training under eminent gurus such as Shri K.N. Dakshinamoorthy, Shri K.J. Govindarajan, and Smt. Kamalini Dutt, adhering to the Guru-Shishya Parampara (teacher-disciple tradition). Throughout her career, Sindhu Mishra has graced numerous prestigious cultural festivals across India as a solo Bharatanatyam dancer, including the Megh Malhar Festival, Jhansi Festival, Lucknow Mahotsav, Taj Mahotsav, Soorya Festival, Ganga Mahotsav, Nisha Gandhi Festival, Palakkad Festival, and Bharat Bhawan. She is recognized for upholding the classical roots of Bharatanatyam while also infusing her choreography with a unique contemporary style, often addressing modern concerns through traditional dance forms. Beyond her dance career, Mishra is also an acknowledged actress in theatre, having worked with prominent directors and featured in major National Festivals of Theatre. In 1997, Sindhu Mishra founded the Aayam Institute Of Performing Arts (also known as Aayam — A Society for the Promotion of Culture) in New Delhi, where she serves as the Guru and institution head. The institute is dedicated to promoting Indian culture by training students in Bharatanatyam, emphasizing the belief that classical dance is a 'sadhna' or meditative practice. She has conducted numerous workshops across India, sharing her insights into modern dance movements.
