🪔 About
Smt. C.K. Amirthavalli, affectionately known as Amirtha aunty or Amirtha maami, is a dedicated Bharatanatyam performer, teacher, and choreographer. Her journey in Indian classical dance began with initiation into Bharatanatyam by Guru Smt. K. Lalitha of Saraswathi Gana Nilayam in Chennai. Following her arangetram, she pursued advanced training in Bangalore under the tutelage of Prof. Mr. M.R. Krishnamurthy, who deeply instilled in her the core values of the Kalakshetra style. Further solidifying her academic credentials and artistic understanding, Smt. Amirthavalli earned an M.F.A. (Master of Fine Arts) in Bharatanatyam from Kalai Kaviri College of Fine Arts, affiliated with Bharatidasan University, Tirucharapalli. Early in her career, Smt. Amirthavalli co-founded “Saadhana,” an active performing ensemble of classical dancers, participating in various in-house and out-of-state performances. In 2005, with the blessings of her Guru, Kittu sir, she established the “Taraangini School of Dance.” This institution was founded with the mission to teach and propagate the rich legacy of Bharatanatyam, particularly emphasizing the Kalakshetra principles of “Art without vulgarity, Beauty without cruelty, and Education without fear.” In 2016, Smt. Amirthavalli relocated to Minneapolis, USA, where she subsequently established the US chapter of Taraangini School of Dance. As the head of the academy, she is known for her passionate teaching approach, stressing the importance of physical and mental discipline, regular practice, and continuous improvement for her students. She encourages students to connect with their cultural roots, understand the technique of execution, express emotions through dance, and contribute to the community through art. The school, based in Eden Prairie, Minneapolis, offers training in the Kalakshetra style of Bharatanatyam. Her students, including Bhavana Ganesh, Jaisri Velmurugan, and Saisha Peram, have participated in community fundraisers, showcasing their dedication to the art form and giving back to the community. Senior students also continue their practice online and assist in conducting classes, reflecting the strong bond and continuous artistic pursuit fostered by Smt. Amirthavalli.
