Souvik Chakraborty is a distinguished Indian classical Kathak dancer based in Kolkata, India. His journey in Kathak began at a young age, with early training at the esteemed Padatik Dance Centre in Kolkata under the tutelage of Pt. Vijai Shankar and Smt. Chetna Jalan. He further honed his skills under Smt. Madhumita Roy and dedicated over two decades to advanced training with the legendary Kathak maestro, Pt. Birju Maharaj, in both Kolkata and Delhi. Additionally, he received valuable guidance from Guru Saswati Sen, which further strengthened his foundation in the traditional Kathak repertoire. Academically, Chakraborty holds a Bachelor's degree in music, known as "Sangeet Visharad," from Pracheen Kala Kendra, Chandigarh, and has been conferred the title of "Nritya Nipuna," signifying an expert in dance, by the Nalanda Dance Research Academy. Renowned for his refined technique, rhythmic precision, and expressive stage presence, Souvik Chakraborty has cultivated a performance style that seamlessly integrates traditional Kathak compositions with contemporary presentation formats. He has graced numerous prestigious classical dance festivals and cultural platforms, including the Pt. Durgalal Festival and SRIJANOTSAV, showcasing his unique blend of traditional aesthetics and modern interpretation. His performances also include collaborations with the Padatik group, as seen at events like Parampara 2026, and participation in significant productions such as "Kathak E-motion." He has also collaborated with other prominent artists, including Odissi dancer Madhusmita Mohanty and Kathak dancer Dr. Sucharita Datta Ghata, presenting duet and ensemble works. Beyond his acclaimed performances, Chakraborty is deeply committed to the propagation of Kathak as an active teacher and choreographer. He conducts comprehensive Kathak training and certified courses for students at institutions such as Anamika Kala Sangam in Kolkata. His choreographic contributions extend to various creative projects, including music videos and digital dance productions, and he notably choreographed a "Thumri Indian Classical Dance" piece for Satabdi Bhowmik. His significant contributions to Indian classical dance have been recognized through prestigious accolades, including the Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Yuva Pratibha Samman in 2008 and the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar, awarded by the Sangeet Natak Akademi in 2013–14.
