Srabani Basu is an accomplished Indian classical Odissi danseuse, performer, teacher, and scholar, with nearly two decades of training and performing experience. Her extensive training in Odissi includes over 15 years in the Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra gharana. She commenced her dance journey at a young age in Kolkata, studying under Smt. Sriparna Roy for eight years. Subsequently, she continued her training in Pune under the tutelage of Guru Smt. Yogini Gandhi for approximately five years, and also received guidance from Guru Smt. Nandini Ghoshal in Kolkata for over a year. To further refine her expertise, Basu has participated in workshops led by the renowned Odissi exponent Guru Smt. Sujata Mohapatra. Beyond her classical dance prowess, Srabani Basu is also a vocalist, known for performing Rabindrasangeet, devotional, and film music. In addition to her artistic pursuits, Basu possesses an academic background in computer science and engineering, and holds a professional role as a senior consultant at IBM India. Her commitment to dance studies is evident through her coursework on 'Indian Classical Dance Pedagogy' from the University of North Carolina, Charlotte (2021), and 'Introduction to Psychology' from a Pune University-affiliated institution (2022). She has contributed to dance scholarship with her research paper on 'Gender studies as applied in Indian dance traditions,' published in Narthaki in April 2022. Furthermore, she conducts independent research exploring Indian classical dance as an effective mode of therapy. Srabani Basu formally began her teaching career in January 2020, offering Odissi training to both children and adults. She actively engages in community outreach, collaborating with NGOs to conduct dance workshops for underprivileged school children and leading sessions for organizations such as the Baithak Foundation in Pune. As a performer, she has graced stages as a lead dancer with the Kalanidhi troupe in Pune and as a soloist in various cities across India. An article from the Shastri Indo Canadian Institute, referring to an Odissi dancer named "Dali Basu" with a computer science degree from the University of Ottawa, who received a Shastri arts scholarship in 2004 to study dance in India, is highly likely to pertain to Srabani Basu's early career, given the strong parallels in her background.
