🪔 About
Dr. Srinidhi Chidambaram is a distinguished Bharatanatyam exponent known for her profound classical foundation and innovative thematic presentations. Born in Chennai, India, she began her Bharatanatyam training at the tender age of three. Her initial guru was the legendary Kamala Lakshman, under whom she trained for approximately seven years. At just four and a half years old, Srinidhi made her stage debut playing the role of young Bharatha in Kamala Lakshman's dance drama 'Shakuntalam'. Her arangetram took place in 1977. Following Kamala Lakshman's relocation to the USA, Srinidhi briefly studied under Guru Vazhuvoor Samraj for about two years. Her primary and most influential guru was Swamimalai S.K. Rajaratnam Pillai, who mentored her until his passing and is credited with honing her talent and shaping her adherence to the Vazhuvoor style of Bharatanatyam. She also received training in nattuvangam from Smt. Kamala Rani of Kalakshetra and music from Suguna Purushottaman. Beyond her artistic pursuits, Srinidhi Chidambaram is also a medical doctor, holding a post-graduate degree in Public Health and Preventive Medicine. She has successfully balanced her demanding medical career with her passion for dance, often integrating her public health knowledge into her artistic work. She is recognized for her ability to draw inspiration from real-world issues to create relevant and contemporary dance pieces, while remaining rooted in classical tradition. Her choreographic works include themes such as "Prabodhana", "Charitam", "Madhuram", "Pudumai Penn", and "Oru Nadhiyin Kadhai", which addressed the Cooum river. Srinidhi has been a convenor for the prestigious Natya Kala Conference of Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, notably for its 36th edition in 2016. She has expressed a preference for performing traditional Bharatanatyam and thematic margams that explore poetry and literature. She is married to Karti Chidambaram. Awards & Honours: Nrithyachoodamani (2000), Yuva Kala Bharathi, Kalaimamani, Dr. M.G.R award, Nadanamamani, Balasaraswathi Memorial Award, Rotary Youth Merit Award, Best Child Talent in the International Year of the Child.
