Guru Subhash Chandra is a venerated Kathak maestro of the Lucknow Gharana, recognized for his profound dedication and extensive training in Indian classical dance. He embarked on his dance journey in 1976 in Varanasi under Guru Mohan Krishna. He received rigorous training under the guidance of the late Pandit Mohanrao Kalyanpurkar in Mumbai from 1979 to 1984. Subsequently, he continued his studies with Guru Munnalal Shukla at Kathak Kendra in New Delhi from 1984 to 1993. His training was further enriched by Guru Smt. Reba Vidyarthi, under whom he trained in the guru-shishya parampara for ten years until 2005, and he also received guidance from Guru Rohini Bhate in Pune through workshops. An exponent of the Lucknow Gharana, Guru Subhash Chandra is known for preserving its classical repertoire and for his nuanced expressions and complex rhythms. He began teaching in 1979 to earn a living, which deepened his understanding of his own technique. He has served as a Kathak Prashikshak (dance instructor) at Kathak Kendra, New Delhi, for over a decade, starting in 2012, and is an ICCR-empaneled mentor. He is also a Grade A artist with Doordarshan. Guru Subhash Chandra conducts workshops and lecture demonstrations at esteemed institutions such as Lalit Kala Kendra and Indira Kala Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya. He emphasizes adherence to traditional techniques and a deep, inward-looking approach to dance, striving to present what he learned from his gurus without dilution.
