🪔 About

Subhashni Giridhar, born on April 27, 1965, is an accomplished Indian classical dancer specializing in Bharatanatyam, a choreographer, a guru, and a qualified Chartered Accountant by profession. Her journey in Bharatanatyam began at the age of eight, driven by an innate passion for dance. She received rigorous training in the Tanjore style from esteemed gurus including Kalaimamani late Guru A.T. Govindaraj Pillai, Kalaimamani late Guru T.K. Mahalingam Pillai, and Guru Vasant Kumar of the renowned Sri Rajarajeswari Bharatanatya Kala Mandir, Matunga. Giridhar made her debut with her Arangetram on January 26, 1990, in Mumbai, marking the beginning of her solo performing career. Based in Hyderabad, she founded the Suguna Nrityalaya dance academy in 1990, in memory of her late sister, Smt. Suguna, who encouraged her artistic pursuits. The academy is dedicated to preserving and propagating the classical dance form through traditional training. Giridhar is known for her thematic recitals that narrate episodes from Hindu mythology, particularly from the Bhagavatam and Bhagavad Gita, emphasizing satvika abhinaya (expressive emotion), precise footwork, and the traditional margam structure. She often incorporates devotional songs composed by her mother, Smt. Lakshmi, into her choreographies. Balancing her dual careers, Giridhar commenced her practice as a Chartered Accountant in 1995. She has consciously chosen not to commercialize her dance, viewing Bharatanatyam as an eternal and spiritual pursuit, and dedicates the revenue from her academy to the 'Suguna Nrityalaya Charitable Trust' for the education of underprivileged children. She completed 25 years as a dance exponent in 2014 and continues to perform and teach, aiming to pass on the art form to future generations. Awards & Honours: ShringaraMani.
