Sumathi Sriram (born 1961, passed away December 9, 2024) was a notable Bharatanatyam artiste and a devoted rasika (connoisseur) of classical Indian music and dance. She holds the unique distinction of being the first student of Bharata Kalanjali, the esteemed dance school founded by the renowned Dhananjayans, joining in 1968. Her association with Bharata Kalanjali was lifelong and multifaceted; she not only trained there but also contributed as a teacher, participated in various programs, and assisted in numerous activities of her alma mater. Her dedication to Bharatanatyam was profound, and Bharata Kalanjali was reportedly planning to celebrate the 50th anniversary of her arangetram shortly before her demise in 2024, indicating her debut performance took place around 1974. Residing in R A Puram, Chennai, Sumathi Sriram was known for her ardent enthusiasm for the arts, actively attending numerous music and dance concerts and heritage programs across the city, including those at The Music Academy, Madras, and Raga Sudha hall. She was cherished by her family and friends for her kind soul and unwavering passion for the arts.
