Sumati Devi is a renowned figure in Indian classical dance, particularly celebrated for her profound contributions to the Odissi dance form. She commenced her training in Odissi at the tender age of six, under the esteemed guidance of the legendary Guru Padma Bhusan Kelu Charan Mahapatra, a pivotal figure in the revival and popularization of Odissi. Her exceptional talent was recognized early in her career when she secured the first prize at the International Children's Film Festival in 1952. This achievement was significant as it marked one of the initial instances where the Odissi dance form gained exposure to a wider audience, helping to popularize it beyond its traditional confines. Sumati Devi distinguished herself as the sole female artist from Orissa (now Odisha) at the time to dedicate her career entirely to Odissi dancing. She performed continuously and extensively across the globe, establishing herself as a renowned classical dancer. Her artistic endeavors included producing innovative dance ballets on varied subjects, showcasing the versatility and expressive potential of Odissi. She joined the Indian Postal Service, qualifying in Allied Service in 1970. Later, she assumed the leadership role of Chief Executive at the Odissi Research Center, an autonomous institution dedicated to promoting and propagating research in various facets of Odisha's rich cultural traditions, including Odissi dance and music. Her leadership was instrumental in the center achieving national recognition for both Odissi music and dance. She also served as the Special Secretary for Culture in the Government of Orissa, further solidifying her influence on the art form's development. Sumati Devi is inextricably linked with the evolution of modern Odissi Dance, and her efforts have been recognized with innumerable awards from various institutions for her profound contributions to the cultural field of Orissa.
