Sumina Das is an accomplished Indian classical Odissi dancer, a senior disciple of the esteemed Guru Mayadhar Raut, a doyen of Odissi Dance, and his daughter, Madhumita Raut, a renowned Odissi dance guru. Her journey in dance commenced at a young age, leading her to join the Shri Ram Bharatiya Kala Kendra, New Delhi, an institution recognized by the Ministry of Human Resources and Development. She successfully obtained her diploma in the Odissi form of dance in 1994. Following her diploma, Sumina Das further honed her skills at the Jayantika School of Odissi Dance, specializing in the intricate nuances of the dance form under the continued tutelage of Guru Mayadhar Raut, who founded the school, and Madhumita Raut. She is recognized for her specialization in the Mayadhar Raut Gharana, a style celebrated for its Lasya (grace), lyricism, and intense Abhinaya (expressive aspect of dance). As a senior disciple, Sumina Das has presented numerous solo performances over the years and has been an integral part of her Guruji's dance entourage at various festivals. Her performances include appearances at the Guru Shishya Parampara festival, the Shruti Mandal Dance festival in Jaipur, the Anjuman Sair-E-Gul Faroshan (Phool Waalon Ki Sair) in Mehrauli, Delhi, and the Epicentre in Gurgaon. A captivating Odissi recital titled 'Om Namah Shivaye' was presented by her at the Epicentre, Gurgaon, in December 2008, showcasing masterpiece compositions of Guru Mayadhar Raut. She also performed in July 2009. Beyond her performances, Sumina Das has contributed to the propagation of Odissi by assisting her Guru, Madhumita Raut, in conducting dance workshops, including a 15-day workshop for Mayo Girls School, Ajmer, and a Spic Macay lecture demonstration at a government school in Delhi. Despite holding an M.B.A. from the Symbiosis Institute of Management and working as a recruitment manager in Delhi, she remains a staunch believer in the Guru-Shishya Parampara. She continues to train under her Guru and aspires to disseminate his teachings globally. Sumina Das is also associated with the Karmic Mantra Foundation, a voluntary organization dedicated to exploring, enriching, and broadening the horizons of Indian classical dance forms and promoting dance in education and therapy.
