Sumona Vohra

Sumona Vohra is a Bharatanatyam dancer and teacher based in California, USA. Her journey in Bharatanatyam began in 1989 with Chari Narasimhan in Fairfax, Virginia. She continued to explore the art form with various teachers, developing a diverse understanding of styles. At the age of 14, Vohra suffered a severe foot injury and was told she would never dance again. However, she returned to dancing four years later, driven by her passion for Indian classical dance. In 1998, she won first prize representing India at an international dance competition. In October 2008, she began intensive arangetram training under the tutelage of Ramya Harishankar of the Arpana School of Dancing in Irvine, California. She successfully held her arangetram (debut public performance) in Bellflower, California, around 2009, fulfilling a long-held dream. Vohra has received the Alliance for California Traditional Arts grant and has performed at numerous dance recitals, cultural events, competitions, and social festivals. Beyond performing, she is a dedicated teacher of Bharatanatyam, Bollywood dance, and yoga. She teaches at the Sindhu Gurukul Center in Norwalk and Yogavidala in Los Angeles, in addition to her alma mater. Vohra is also a certified yoga teacher from Cloud Nine Yoga in Huntington Beach, California. Her story is one of perseverance and dedication to her art form, inspiring others to pursue their passions regardless of age or challenges.
